Creative Problem Solving Challenges
“The memorizer can only solve problems he has encountered already, but the problem solver can solve problems she's never seen before.” - Richard Rusczyk
Creativity is a skill that can be developed. Through a series of weekly activities, students will develop their creativity, idea generating, and brainstorming skills. We will then apply those skills to solve fun and interesting challenges and projects. Taking different perspectives, making new connections, collaborating with others, brainstorming, digging deeper, getting ‘out-of-the-box’ and going beyond what we know to what we don’t yet know - these skills are not only valuable for academics, but translate to all aspects of life. Our goal is that you never utter the words, "I'm not creative."
Students will work on projects in class and at home and have opportunities to present. Problem solving through creativity is the journey.
This class was developed based on feedback from our students. They LOVE problem solving projects and challenges: a perfect match with our mission to provide learning by doing, even in a virtual environment.

Spies, Codes and the Civil War
(FULL- will open another section Thursday afternoons if enough interest. Let us know if you want to be on the wait list.)
Spies are fascinating. We love intrigue, secrets, codes, and gadgets. Spies have been around for thousands of years and the tools and techniques they use to ply their craft continue to get more sophisticated. In this class, we’ll learn about spying during the Civil War and how each tool and technique helped provide information to the Union to keep our nation together.
Activity based, each student will receive a dossier of an actual Civil War spy. They will put together a spy disguise that they can use throughout the class and make spy gadgets along the way. They will create and decipher codes and learn about famous code makers and breakers in US history. Finally, we will dive into modern day spies, gadgets and techniques and understand how these skills are used for our own national security every day.

Adulting 101
Adulthood is a gradual transition, not a magical moment dictated by a birthdate. There are exciting things like buying a car, moving out of your parent’s house, staying up late, and eating whatever you want. Balanced with practical things like paying for that car, insurance, and repairs, how to find an apartment, and practicing self care.
Based directly on the requests of our teen students, we have developed this class to cover some of the exciting and practical aspects of adulting. We will cover financial matters, basic life skills, and communication skills. When students leave this class, they will know how to search for a job, explore careers, how to communicate professionally, how to sew a button, how to make a few meals beyond the box, the basics of investing, filing taxes, making a budget, what things cost, what to look for when buying a car or renting an apartment, and more.
It takes a village to raise our kids and get them to adulthood and sometimes they need to hear things from adults other than their parents when it comes to these practical topics. Our students were very specific in the topics they requested and we have put together this class as an answer to their questions. Together, we can set them on a path to being successful adults.
